Playstation 3 for $499/$599 …. WHY?!
Sony, is now more than ever seriously out of its collective mind. Not only is the PS3 the most expensive console ever, it’s also even more handicapped by the 2 pricing scheme than the Xbox 360 was. Sure the cheap 360 had no hard drive, but you could buy the hard drive for $100, so it wasn’t a huge deal. On the other hand the “cheap” model of the PS3 is missing WiFi, MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash reader functionality, and HDMI. Esentially, the PS3 is an overpriced machine that in reality doesn’t look or play any better than the Xbox 360. But wait, there’s more!
The biggest problem with High-Def movie standards is the content protection flag that is going to be common in a few years. That flag requires HDMI and HDCP to allow for HD movies to actually play in HD. Otherwise, they won’t play in HD. They will play in 540p. Sure, that’s better than a DVD, but it’s not the “Full” or “True” High Definition that Sony has been promising this year. A lot of people are going to be verry pissed about this a year or two from now when the cheap PS3 downrez’s their $35 Blu-Ray movies.
All I can say is that this is classic Sony. The PS3 is an overpriced joke and that’s that. Sure, it will have some great games, but is it going to be worth twice the price of the Xbox 360? NO. Is it going to be worth 3x the price of the Wii. NO. This generation, expect Sony to fall the same way Nintendo did with the N64/Gamecube. They are out of touch with the consumer and the PS3 is going to fail in comparision to the PS1/PS2. Don’t expect the PS3 to sell more than 50 million units. That’s about what the N64 did. It’s not bad, but that’s not even close to the 100 million that the PS1 and PS2 sold. First Sony killed the Walkman, now the Playstation.

This should really heat up the war between Microsoft and Sony. I wonder what consumers will decide - price or power?

I was amazed by the price for the upcoming PS3. I recently acquired the original Xbox console and have since been fully hooked back into gaming. The price of the new PS3 is a big turn off for me unless they have something different to offer. That does not appear to be the case according to your post.
