Final Fantasy VII: Conspiracy Theory
This year was a hugely disappointing showing from Sony for one reason and one reason only. There was no Final Fantasy VII demo present. After the stunning showing last year I have been wondering what Square’s real plans are. No company would go that far to make an amazing demo just for fun. So what’s Square’s plan?
Well, Square’s on a huge quest to fully realize the awesomeness of FF VII and they’ve even mentioned in interviews that remaking Final Fantasy VII would be a great way to finish this quest of theirs. At the same time Sony needs a game to really sell the Playstation 3. Since Grand Theft Auto won’t be the dealbreaker this time around, Final Fantasy VII could be the game that makes the difference.
Wait, a remake of FF VII would be a system seller and could instantly move 5 million games and systems worldwide. It’s pretty much a guaranteed hit game, so why haven’t we heard Square sounding the trumpets of the triumphant return of FF VII? Sony needs this game to push the Playstation 3 and with the weak showing this year from other titles, why hasn’t it surfaced? WHY?!
Could it be that Square has a surprise planned? What if Square is bringing Final Fantasy VII to the Xbox 360? We already have played the stunning Fight Night 3 (originally demoed on the PS3), so the 360 could easily handle it. Also, Square’s investment in the game would be minimal and it would give the 360 a very strong position worldwide. It would be a fantastic surprise and it would provide the Xbox 360 with longjevity far beyond Halo 3. If anything Microsoft would love to get Final Fantasy VII on the 360.
Now, is there anything that supports this? Well, the only thing I’ve found to support this wild conspiracy theory is that Square isn’t showing any love to the Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XI is a joke and so I dn’t really consider that any reasonable level of support… Recently Microsoft big-wig Peter Moore was asked about why Square announced FF XIII for the PS3 and essentially nothing for the Xbox 360. His response was this: “Well, they just haven’t announced things yet. It’s their call.” That doesn’t give us much, but it gives up something. Square has something planned for the 360 and Microsoft can’t say anything until Square decides to unveil it. Also, EGM is saying that Final Fantasy VII is coming. To add to the fire, Square Enix’s PR department hasn’t denied the rumors, they just haven’t announced anything yet. So, they haven’t annouced anything about FF VII and they haven’t annouced their upcoming plans for the Xbox 360….The plot thickens!
Personally I hope Square’s secret Xbox 360 project is Final Fantasy VII or maybe Dragon Quest IX. Both would be fantastic additions to the Xbox 360. Add either of those to Blue Dragon and the other Mistwalker RPG’s to come, and the 360 could really take off in Japan. At the same time my biggest fear is that Square is going to put another steaming pile of poop out for another non-Sony console. If Xbox 360 gets shafted with something similar to Crystal Chronicles, a lot of gamers are going to be pissed. The 360 deserves some great RPG’s and if Microsoft can throw some money around, they should be able to make something happen. Hopefully that something is FF VII. That would please A LOT of gamers.
